Using Dough or Frozen Rolls to Make Hot Cross Buns

Frozen RollsDid you know that September 11 is National Hot Cross Bun Day? Whether you’re currently using raw dough or frozen rolls in your restaurant or cafeteria, you can put these specialty buns on your menu, and then wait and watch as your customers gobble them up!

If using package dough that has not yet been baked at all, making hot cross buns is really easy. Just roll out the dough into small circles (one circle will make one roll) and then stuff it with raisins and spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and all spice. Then bring the corners up to the middle of the dough and pinch to seal. Bake as you normally would and then drizzle a glaze made simply of confectioner’s sugar and water over top.

If you’re using rolls that have already been baked into rolls, you can still make hot cross buns that will be very tasty. Simply brush them with a bit of melted butter, then sprinkle on the raisins and spices, gently pressing the raisins in to help them stick. Place them in a very hot oven (about 450 degrees) for only about five minutes to really make the raisins stick. When bringing them out of the oven, drizzle them with the same sugar glaze and then just wait for the glaze to set.

Unfortunately, you can’t make hot cross buns out of pizza dough, as the two types of bread are very different. But if you’re already making rolls, turning them into hot cross buns is really simple, and tasty!
