Turning Whole Wheat Products into Healthy Cheese Danishes

Packaged DoughYummy cheese Danishes will please a crowd at any time of the day you serve them. What might turn customers away though is the high amount of calories that often comes with these pastry treats. You can solve that problem by simply replacing white flour dough with whole wheat products – and you can use freezer to oven dough that you use for pizza, too!

Start by stretching whole wheat or multigrain dough products into individual rectangles, about six inches across and eight inches in length. Spread cream cheese liberally in the center and out towards the edges, making sure to leave about an inch of space along each side. On top of that place approximately three tablespoons of raspberry or strawberry jam, and spread that around slightly.

Fold up the sides of the dough so that they meet and crimp to seal edges, and then fold the seam under. Repeat with the narrow ends, ensuring that seams are completely sealed. Make small slits in the top to allow steam to escape and place in a 375 degree oven for approximately 20 minutes, or until dough begins to turn a golden brown and jam has started bubbling.

Remove Danishes from oven, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and then serve hot or at room temperature. These will be delicious anyway you serve them!
