Turning Frozen Pizza Shells into Crackers? Really?

DeIorios doughWhen you’re thinking of things you could make from your frozen pizza shells to turn them into delicious appetizers, think crackers! Creating crackers from retail pizza dough is easy. All you need is some sea salt, olive oil, and a rolling pin!

If you’re using frozen pizza dough, first allow it to completely thaw and roll out on a work surface generously dusted with flour. Then roll it out until it’s super thin, even if it’s sheets of dough that you’re using. The dough needs to be very thin in order to make crackers with it. Something that can often help with this is by laying the dough on a piece of parchment paper after you’ve dusted it in flour. Roll it out on the parchment and then, you’ll be able to simply flip it over onto a baking tray and easily slip off the parchment without tearing the dough.

Drizzle the dough with olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and place in an oven that’s been preheated to a very high heat, about 450 degrees. Bake until the dough is very, very crispy; this should only take a few minutes. Once the dough has turned into a thin, crisp sheet inside your oven, remove it and allow it to completely cool on the baking tray. Once it has, break it into many pieces, creating crackers.

Once you have the sheet of crackers, your imagination is the only thing stopping you. You can break it up into very small pieces and serve with hummus or other dip as an appetizer; or you can break off large pieces and use it as a garnish for other dishes. When you can make homemade crackers, the options of what you can do with it are limitless!
