Pan-Dowdy Uses Leftover Frozen Breadsticks and Frozen Bread Dough!

Par Baked ShellsAs a restaurateur, you know how important it is to use one ingredient for as many dishes as possible to help cut food costs. So what if you could make one dish using both frozen bread dough and frozen breadsticks? With New England’s pan-dowdy, you can!

Ingredients:

  • 1 package dough thawed
  • 3 cups apples, peeled and quartered, plus one
  • 1 cup stale bread, broken into pieces
  • ½ cup molasses
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ teaspoon cloves
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and generously grease a large casserole dish.
  2. To the dish add the 3 cups of apples, and cover with the dough you are using. Place in the oven and bake until apples are soft and crust is starting to turn golden, about 20 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, mix the molasses, sugar and spices in a small bowl.
  4. When apples are done cooking, remove casserole from the oven. Gently take off the crust made of bread dough and pour molasses mixture evenly over surface. Dot with butter, then sprinkle bread crumbs over top.
  5. Replace the crust with the brown side down and add remaining apples over top. Cover loosely with aluminum foil and then return to oven to bake for about two hours.

When done, remove this dish from the oven and allow it to rest for at least 10 minutes. Then just slice it up and serve it with some deliciously cold ice cream!
