Gluten-Free is a Huge Trend, and it Extends to Pizza Crust!

A study conducted at the end of last year by the Mayo Clinic shows that while 1.8 Americans are suffering from celiac disease, and so cannot digest gluten, gluten-free diets are becoming more trend than anything else. The study also shows that in addition to that, 1.6 million Pizza Dough ManufacturerAmericans are searching for things such as pizza crust and wholesale bread that is gluten-free. And this could actually be detrimental to them.

Peter H.R. Green, MD, director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University explained that many people go gluten-free, even when they don’t suffer from celiac disease, because they think it’s healthier. But if you’re not suffering from a medical condition, eating gluten-free products can actually be detrimental to your health. The reason? It’s a protein, and our bodies need it.

“Unless people are very careful, a gluten-free diet can lack vitamins, minerals, and fiber,” says Green.

This is because gluten is found in food items such as barley, whole wheat, and rye – products that are very good for you! And by not eating them, you’re not only missing out on some of the nutritional components of gluten, but of the foods in which it’s in.

So if you’re not suffering from celiac disease, go ahead and indulge in all that ooey gooey New York style pizza dough, and all those other great products packed with gluten. Turns out, if you don’t need to eliminate it from your diet, it can be really good for you!
