Give Customers a Taste of Germany with Bratwurst and Spicy Onions Wrapped in Sub Rolls!

Sub rollsWhen pizzerias are trying to serve ethnic food, they often go to Italian food. After all, pizza and pizza crust are Italian, so the jump to other Italian foods seems to make sense. And it does! But there other items you can use too, probably already in your stockroom, to create other ethnic foods. And using plain rolls is a great way to serve up a taste of Germany!

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of sub rolls
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable or olive oil
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced on a mandolin
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of your favorite hot sauce
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Fresh bratwursts
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. When boiling, add bratwursts and cook for about 10 minutes until firm.
  2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium heat, drop oil and warm. When oil is hot, add to the skillet: onions, garlic, hot sauce, celery seed, chili powder, and salt and pepper.
  3. Cook onions until they wilt down, turn soft, and begin to carmalize. This should take about 20 minutes.
  4. When bratwurst is finished boiling, place them on a hot grill for just a few minutes, turning to get the char marks from the grill plate.
  5. When finished, place bratwurst on the roll and then just top very generously with onion mixture. Top with just a drizzle of mustard, and serve!
