Frozen Bagels: From Authentic Delicacy to Hot Commodity!

It’s often thought that the history of frozen bagels comes from the Battle of Vienna when the Polish people created a bread in honor of the king at the time. And while a fun story, it is only legend. The bagel does come from Poland, but it comes from 1610, more than 50 years after the “roll for the king story” was said to happen.

When the bagel was first introduced however, it was in Krakow, when it was presented to women at the time of childbirth as a gift. Throughout the 16th and 17th century, this ritual became less known, but the bagel remained prevalent throughout Poland, and became a part of their national diet. And when the bagel made its way to the United States from Poland, it was the Polish Jews that brought them.

That was in the 19th century, when they were first brought to Manhattan’s Lower East Side and Chicago. These were the two places where bagels first exploded in the U.S., and really became a very big business. After the Second World War, more immigrant Jewish communities made their way to the States and many went to California. This was the third area of the States that became highly known for the bagels they sold.

It still wasn’t until the 1950s though that bagels became known outside of these parts. And it was around that same time that they started being sold as frozen bagged products to grocery stores and restaurants.
