Rum balls are a great Christmas treat, but what about when you want them in the middle of the summer? You could whip up that traditional batch, or you can put a whole new spin on it by using wholesale bread. In fact, you could use just about any kind of dough, including pizza dough balls.
Ingredients:
- 1 package dough
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup water
- 2 teaspoons rum extract
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Maraschino cherries for garnish
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a muffin tin. Thaw dough until it reaches room temperature.
- Cut your chosen dough into 12 pieces of the same size and place one piece into each muffin tin. Then brush the dough with melted butter.
- Place muffin tin in the oven and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the dough is a golden brown.
- While the dough is baking, mix the rum extract, sugar, and water in a medium-sized pot. Stir and place over medium heat, stirring the entire time. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil and then allow it to simmer for about five minutes, until it thickens slightly.
- Remove dough from oven when cooked through and allow to cool for just five minutes. Using a fork, prick the tops of the dough several times and then gently pour the rum mixture over top. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and then top with a maraschino cherry.
