An Athlete Proves that Eating Pizza Dough Can Be Good for Your Health!

Dough BallsDid you really think that eating all that gooey pizza dough was actually bad for you? Turns out, it might be healthier than you think. And you can thank competitive cyclist, Matt McClellan, for proving it to you.

Matt isn’t just a cyclist out with something to prove, he’s also the owner of a pizzeria in St. Petersburgh, Florida, called Tour de Pizza. He says that at one time, he thought he was hurting people by selling them calorie-laden, artery-clogging Italian pizza dough

“I used to believe that pizza was a junk food,” he said. “I used to believe that pizza was a junk food. I felt guilty selling pizza. But now I know I am not hurting people.”

He knows that because he challenged himself once to find out exactly how damaging America’s most popular dinnertime treat is. He once ate pizza for 30 days straight, all the while working out. At the end of it all, he lost 24 pounds, and figured out why pizza was not nearly the junk food people assume it is. He says that from the mozzarella people get calcium and protein, carbohydrates (that we all actually need some of) from the crust, and lycopene, a cancer-fighting nutrient, is gained from the tomato sauce. Of course, those who eat gluten free pizza can help lower those carbs many people are so worried about, and make pizza even healthier.

So if you’re worried about eating too much pizza, don’t stress about it all that much. Take heart in the knowledge that you can eat however much you would like, but remember that it won’t hurt to work out every now and then along the way.
